..."A fight broke out after the "hippies" -- actually just college kids and rock fans with long hair -- began blocking traffic. A car of Marines got into a minor accident, punching someone in another car and mayhem began to break out. The police cordoned off the strip, ordering everyone out, but the assembled crowd wasn't having it.
Soon bedlam was unleashed. The crowd began throwing bottles and rocks. A city bus was attacked, its passengers forced out and the windows and tires destroyed. The events that unfolded resulted in Sonny and Cher losing their spot on a Monterey float, Peter Fonda put in handcuffs and the Buffalo Springfield classic, "For What It's Worth."
