...as a young man of sixteen in 1970 and having had the distinct pleasure and honor of growing up in the bay area of San Francisco, as we were rolling out of the Haight-Ashbury hippie era of the late sixties leading into the early seventies, there was only one place to be on particular weekends in 1970 when The Cockettes would perform at The Palace Theater. During the week, it was a movie theater that showed only Chinese films in the North Beach area. But, on those magical nights at midnight, The Cockettes would rule the entire town. Every freak who was anyone was there, comparable to the opening night of the opera but for the adventurous, androgynous and astronomically colorful with an electricity in the air that I can feel to this day. Shows such as Tinsel Tarts In A Hot Coma, Journey To The Center Of Uranus and Pearls Over Shanghai were a revelation sending such wonderful performers as Sylvester,Divine,Fayette,John Rothermel and Hibiscus Flowers out into our universe. They ruled the city, but, like all truly wonderful creations, they burned hot and fast and within two years by 1972,the party was over and the world moved on to other things. I take this moment to bless and thank them all for their creative energies that produced a time not to be seen again, each and every one of you wonderful people who made up the one and only Cockettes.

And thanks to directors David Weissman and Bill Weber for their amazing documentary. [They even gave me a screen credit.]
